The Graphical Kernel System GKS is close before its final publication as an International Standard (IS0 IS 7942), and a number of national standardization bodies will to adopt GKS as a national standard. In the UK, GKS already has the status of a national standard. The question of the availability of implementations becomes very important. Without readily available implementations the design of GKS will remain a theoretical exercise. Only if complete, efficient, and correct implementations exist for the major programming languages, for most operating systems and for most graphical devices, GKS will have the desired impact on the practise of computer graphics programming.
