This special issue on the future of qualitative physics (QP) is exciting reading, filled with controversy. The issue starts with a position paper by Elisha Sacks and Jon Doyle which strongly criticizes aspects of the field; subsequent responses take a dizzying array of positions, many praising qualitative physics. In this introduction, I attempt to make sense of the debate. However, before summarizing the arguments, I briefly describe the field and its aspirations.
