Including pupils with special educational needs within the National Curriculum calls for substantial changes in content and approach in all subjects ‐ including mathematics. Alec Williams, formerly headteacher of Stokesbrook special school, Gloucestershire, and tutor to special education diploma courses in Hull and Lincoln, reports and reflects upon the changes. He seeks to retain and enhance that which is best from traditional practice, within the requirements of the National Curriculum.
