An attempt is made to investigate NUEDC as a vehicle for enhancing active learning, and some observations from the contest that point towards how we can move from traditional teaching to active learning, are presented. Students' performance was observed before and after the contest, and all the participating students were asked to write their reports about their experience. The students' involvement in NUEDC consisted of three phases such as training course, NUEDC (2009), and students' reflections on the contest. The investigation showed that students prefer active learning to traditional lectures and evidence are found emphasizing on theoretical teaching and students' passive listening while ignoring students' active engagement in learning. It was observed that while most students can operate one type of instrument over 50% experienced difficulties with new instruments.
