Managing summative computer‐aided assessment failures: further evidence for ‘optional substitution’

A recent BJET article (Harwood, 2005) has outlined how 'optional substitution' was used to recover from a large-scale summative CAA failure. This follow-up article draws on a new (full) data set to confirm the appropriateness of using maximum formative marks (rather than average formative scores for instance) as a proxy measure of summative performance. A decision-making aid is also provided to guide those unfortunate enough to be considering the use of optional substitution following a CAA failure.
