Over the past two years, as a member of the team of tutors attached to the PGCE (Primary) teacher training course at Chester College of Higher Education, I have been involved in developing several initiatives to improve students’ IT capabilities. Since its inception six years ago the course has adopted a partnership approach to teacher education, with HE and primary school staff sharing responsibility for students’ professional development. Therefore, the move towards more school-based training is not one for which the course has been unprepared, although the changing role of tutors, class teachers and mentors has required some adjustment by all concerned.
