IET has a five-year plan, most of which is work for the OU. Qualit9 assurance (mainly evaluation, in the old lingo) is one leg of the plan. Study student access and retention. Survey what students think of OU courses and services. Build up the archive of student-related research data. Feed results into course design. Making multimedia work is another leg. Help academics in course teams to think it through. Make and test prototypes. Enhance the OU policy on hardware and software for students. Exploit computer conferencing. Meet at least some needs of disabled students. Research is the third leg. Look into the quality of students’ learning. Undermine the barriers facing women and other disadvantaged students. Find out how new media can help distance education. And so on.
