In this paper, the author reflects on his first experience of tutoring on an online course. He compares online courses with their classroom and distance learning equivalents, from the point of view of both tutors and learners. This leads to a consideration of the multiple roles of the online tutor and how they can be acquired. The paper ends with an appraisal of some of the risks and drawbacks of online courses.
