The Faculty of Education and the Department of Adult and Continuing Education have been involved in collaborative and innovative projects involving conflict resolution and exploitation of new educational technologies. A collaborative project on education for mutual understanding has been underway for many years. with the University’s Centre for the Study of Conflict (Smith and Robinson 1992). Successful innovative work is continuing on the potential for multi-site video-conferencing as a teaching aid (Dallat et al 1992). The Department of Adult and Continuing Education’s Community Development Studies Unit received the 1990 Shell UK award for Open Learning. The unit’s contribution to the social and economic regeneration of the north-western region of Northern Ireland is described and evaluated by Shanahan (1 992).
