Daniel Chandler’s article (B jET 21 3 ) cannot pass by without a reply. Doubtless he is deliberately contentious and I recognise that thoughtful people should bring us to a halt occasionally and make us reflect on our cherished preconceptions and cosy suppositions. However, that process should include an examination of the ideologies underlying the critique, thus clearing the way for an alternative evaluation of the issues that ultimately should benefit the pupils and students we teach. Here I want to focus on literacy, data-handling, word processing, and the UK’s National Curriculum for English.
