A cursory glance at educational computing magazines shows how the computing industry shapes demand with its heavy advertising. In the US, IBM has gone one step further and co-sponsored the 1988 Teacher of the Year Awards for ‘teaching excellence through the use of computer technology’. One of the winners, the ‘Future Business Leaders of America’ group at Wayne High School developed a prdect which created sufficient profits to take them to the National Leadership Conference. (Incidentally, there may be cause for concern over equal opportunities for ethnic minorities in that all 1 3 winning teachers appeared to have European features.) Nor does it seem to be the case that computer manufacturers are designing machines specifically for education: I doubt whether school demand is strong enough to support any machine that can’t fall back on sales to businesses.
