For many disabled people, computers offer the potential to increase independence and quality of life, and to reduce the degree of handicap caused by their disability. However, unless the disabled person has an effective means of controlling a computer, this potential will remain untapped, and in an increasingly computerised society the result may be a relatively greater degree of handicap (Stevens, 1984; Pickering and Stevens, 1986).
