The use of videocartridges as self‐instructional material in libraries has increased considerably during recent years. In this investigation information was collected to answer the following questions. (1) Who uses the material and when? (2) How are the materials used? (3) How do the materials relate to the student's course and assessment? (4) What is the main purpose of the materials? The methods used included observation, questionnaires, free response, individual and group interviews. The responses are reported along with suggestions for improving the system in use. Over 90 students contributed to the investigation.
