This paper describes an induction programme arranged for new members of staff of the Open University Technology Faculty, which took the form of a series of linked workshops designed to introduce participants to the task of producing distance‐teaching material and to develop an awareness of the underlying educational issues. The emphasis is on the design assumptions on which we planned the programme.
