The use of videocartridges as self‐instructional material in libraries has increased considerably during recent years. An analysis of the costs of such provisions is outlined. The costs relate to a particular university, but it is suggested that the range of costs should cover most similar institutions. Full details of the assumptions and the basis of the cost analysis are included based on methods used by other workers but incorporating additional elements. A considerable investment in materials and staff is involved in a service such as this. Is it worth investing in these materials?
