Little work has been done on the cognitive processes involved in ordinary film‐viewing. There are both practical and theoretical obstacles in the way of such work. This study seeks to circumvent both kinds of obstacle in an investigation of some determinants of film perception. After viewing a film a sample of children completed questionnaires which gave information on their grasp of the film's content, on matching variables, and on design factors. In this way it was possible to examine patterns in the grasp of content and relate them to variables such as sex and experience of the cinema.
