Australians had been competing against individuals and teams from other countries sporadically during the latter decades of the nineteenth century. The relationship of these sporting exchanges and an awareness of Australia and Australians can be gleaned from the following selections from an article in Town Talk of London, which was reprodud in the Sydney Morning Herald of August 3, 1878. The article was entitled ‘What her athletes are doing for Australia’.
