Summary This paper describes an investigation of two statistics which compare two ordered sequences of objects by providing a measure of the discordance when the sequences are slotted together. Configurations having zero discordance are described. Plausible null models for data are postulated, and an account is given of a simulation study which investigated the distribution of the statistics when these models were used in the analysis of physical logging data from two wells.
