In this note the significance of sufficiency in the study of statistical thermodyna, mics has been investigated. Firstly, Mandelbrot's “Criteria of sufficiency” for the determination of temperature of a heat‐reservoir and the corresponding canonical distribution for thermal equilibrium of a system immersed in the heat‐reservoir have been studied from an inf ormation‐theoretic approach. Secondly, the fluctuation of temperature has been obtained from the notion of sufficiency.
