The hunting of wild birds is practised intensively in the Mediterranean region generally and in particular the islands. This article looks at the dynamics of shooting and trapping in the archipelago‐state of Malta. Hunting passion, land transformations, and interactions with a number of key actors are discussed with reference to local politics and EU legislation. It is also suggested that Mediterranean bird hunting might be understood as a legacy of deep rooted practices of food production in the region.
