Under specific authorization of the Congress of the United States of America, the President has designated the Administrator of the Agency for International Development (AID) as his Special Coordinator for International Disaster Assistance. The Administrator has designated the Director of AID’S Office of US. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) as his Deputy Special Coordinator. This Office is responsible for coordinating the U.S. Government programmes in international disaster assistance. In carrying out its programme, the Office draws support from the 3,600 AID personnel with expertise in foreign countries, regions of the world, disciplines, technical areas, and foreign relations. The Office also calls on resources it needs from other agencies of the US. Government. It is currently carrying out programmes with the U.S. Geological Survey, the National Aeronautic and Space Administration, the National Bureau of Standards, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Academy of Sciences, the Department of Defence, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The Office maintains direct communication with The White House and with both branches of the Congress.
