S ummary Five types of creative mathematician are identified on the basis of the subjects' own Q ‐sort descriptions of their research style Personality and background correlates of each type are presented. Whereas descriptions of the mother had differentiated creative from comparison mathematicians, traits of the father were important in the differentiation of the creative types Relative to one another, one type is “adapted,” one is “conflicted,” and three are about equally “creative,” these labels being taken from the Rankian paradigm The “creative” types are described, after Neumann, on the basis of the relation between ego and unconscious One is described as matriarchal and two as patriarchal Of the two patriarchal, one emphasizes “Puritan” achievement‐orientation, the other “Mediterranean” intellectual breadth and harmony.
