This paper proposes a model of treatment for severe anorexia nervosa which integrates hospitalization, individual psychotherapy and family therapy. Family intervention is based on a method proposed by the Milan team (the‘invariant prescription’), which has been adapted by the authors to suit the characteristics of their working context (the psychiatric unit of a general hospital). Following a review of the work of Selvini Palazzoli and associates on anorexia nervosa and the‘invariant prescription’, the authors describe their treatment model and give a case example.
