This paper seeks to establish a perspective on the cost structure of the range of financial intermediaries which comprise the permanent building society industry in Australia. Its prime objective is to examine the inter‐relationship between operating expenses and size (measured by total assets) and the scope that may potentially exist for significant scale economies.
