Summary The article reviews the background to the FA CC report on sweeteners in food, and the recommendations made by the committee, regarding a permitted list of intense and bulk sweeteners. With the introduction of several new sweeteners onto the UK market imminent, the article describes the properties, applications and nutritional/dietetic implications resulting from the use of the intense sweeteners that have been approved for food use in the UK.
