Synopsis Single dermal application of p‐phenylene diamine in guinea‐pigs caused pathomorphological lesions over a period of 24 h which later disappeared. Lipid peroxidation activity of skin homogenate showed significant inhibition, whereas superoxide dismutase was unaffected. Histamine content increased initially but showed drastic reduction during recovery. The significance of the data in the potential dermal toxicity of hair dyes is discussed.
