Dickerson (1980) proposes rules for assigning tense and lax qualities to stressed spelled vowels in English. I argue that more systematic word samples should be used, and that these samples should be based on word frequency data. I also suggest new rules, criticize Dickerson's analysis of lax vowels in verbs, propose needed rules of stress assignment, and suggest that laxing rules can be dispensed with.
