Marathi‐speaking high school students were tested on English proficiency and the nature of their motivation for learning English. The results showed that they were instrumentally motivated to learn English and that instrumental motivation scores correlated significantly with English proficiency scores. They regarded the two communities, Marathi‐speakers and English‐speaking Indians, as their reference groups for different areas of their life, and saw themselves as based in their own cummunity but reaching out to modern ideas and life‐styles.
