1.1 Undue emphasis on words as words to the neglect of pronunciation and grammatical structure is not in keeping with modern linguistic thinking. Sapir says bluntly in talking about linguistic study, "The linguistic student should never make :he mistake of identifying a language with its dictionary." On the other hand, one cannot deny or ignore the existence of the word as a tangible unit of language. Sapir again, with characterist ic insight, puts it thus:
