This paper identifies unresolved contemporary challenges for alcohol and other drug prevention including: (i) the perspective held by researchers and practitioners which guides prevention; (ii) the value of respectful partnerships of research and practice in prevention; (iii) the need for effective and practical research designs; and (iv) the means to institutionalise effective prevention efforts, especially at the community level. These challenges will need to be addressed now and in the future to improve prevention in the 21st century. [Holder HD.
