The world of medical publishing is a highly competitive one. There is now so much choice when a clinician or researcher comes to select a journal to which to submit his or her paper, and electronic submission has facilitated that process to literally the ‘click of a mouse’. In this environment it is essential that the BJU International maintains its appeal to both those who submit their papers, reviews and comments, and crucially, to our readers; for what is the point of all this endeavour if in the end it does not result in improved patient care? To this end the editorial team continues to work hard not only to enhance the content of the journal, but also to improve the format and presentation of the publication, and thereby make it more interesting and attractive to readers. Although our ‘impact factor’, i.e. the number of citations the papers we publish attract, is important to us, so is our ‘readability’, as we want you, the reader, to pick up our journal and peruse it, not just leave it in the pile along with some of our less interesting rival urological publications.
