Summary— A retrospective study was carried out on 200 patients who underwent surgery between January 1989 and September 1991. The aim was to investigate the development of urinary retention following renal and ureteric surgery. The incidence of urinary retention was 55% for patients in the renal group and 26% for those in the ureteric group. In a control group of 100 patients undergoing cholecystectomy the incidence was 5%. The results showed that bladder function was inhibited greatly after renal surgery. Catheterisation in the pre‐operative period may help to prevent post‐operative urinary retention.
