Summary— The application of the indicator dilution technique for the estimation of blood loss during transurethral resection of the prostate gland is explained. The feasibility of using potassium ions as an intrinsic indicator was investigated. The most important factors affecting blood loss are considered. The advantages and inherent sources of error are discussed and some tentative conclusions drawn concerning the factors affecting blood loss.
