Summary— Reasons for the increased role of radical radiotherapy in the management of carcinoma of the prostate are presented. The results of a retrospective survey of 116 patients who received radical external beam radiotherapy to the primary tumour are reviewed. Local tumour control was obtained in 75% of patients with an overall morbidity of 14% mild and 9% severe side effects. The problems of accurate tumour staging, extended field radiotherapy and patient selection are discussed. In selected cases, treatment morbidity may be reduced by using interstitial implant techniques.
