Summary— Two thousand eight hundred and eighty‐seven prostatectomies for benign enlargement were performed between 1974 and 1979 with a mortality of 1.25%. There was a steady increase in the proportion performed transurethrally and a decrease in the hospital stay. Fewer TURs were undertaken in emergency than in elective cases.
