Summary A controlled trial is described in which PGA is compared with catgut as a suture material for circumcision. Of a total of 56 operations, PGA was used in 28, plain catgut in 14 and chromic catgut in 14. A good result, indicated by the absence of discomfort or local reaction after 7 days, was obtained in 82% of cases with PGA, in 43% with chromic catgut and in 36% with plain catgut sutures. However, the finding that 25% of PGA sutures are still present at 28 days is a major disadvantage and their use can not be recommended in this particular operation.
