SUMMARY A clinicopathological appraisal of 42 cases of amyloidosis of the urinary bladder, including 9 cases from this institution (5 previously reported), is presented. Good follow‐up information indicates a benign course for the localised lesions confined to the bladder, for which transurethral biopsy with resection and fulguration is the treatment of choice. Diffuse bladder involvement is more serious, and subsequent urinary diversion may be required. One case was unusual in that lower urinary tract symptoms occurred in a patient with systemic amyloidosis who subsequently succumbed to the disease. In another case, a year later a highly malignant urothelial vesical carcinoma developed soon after recurrent amyloid lesions had been successfully treated elsewhere. Patients with frequent recurrences should be screened carefully for possible malignant change.
