SUMMARY A cineradiographic investigation into the return of conduction of the peristaltic wave after end‐to–end anastomosis of the ureter has been made in both humans and dogs. This has shown that initially the wave is present in the upper segment but stops abruptly at the site of anastomosis. After about 2 weeks independent contractions are present in both the upper and the lower segments, but there is no co‐ordination between them. Conduction of the peristaltic wave across the anastomotic site returns between the 23rd and 26th day and the co‐ordinated contractions of the ureter return to normal. It is suggested that during the period of physiological abnormality there is an increased hydrostatic strain on the suture line. This gives strong support for the proximal deviation of urine during this period. A controlled method of deviation as described, until after the return of normal peristaltic activity, is advocated.
