SUMMARY U‐tube pyelonephrostomy is reported in 68 cases over a period of 12 years. The main advantages of this technique, used mainly for long‐term urinary diversion from the kidney, are prevention of loss of the drain, easy changing without complications and the possibility of continuous irrigation of the renal pelvis. The complications observed were stenosis and scarring of the uretero‐pelvic junction where the incision in the renal pelvis for the insertion of the nephrostomy drain was made too close to the uretero‐pelvic junction. U‐tube pyelonephrostomy is a valid method for long‐term urinary diversion.
