SUMMARY A long‐acting sulphonamide preparation sulphamethoxydiazine (Durenate) was examined for its antibacterial activity and pharmacological action. The peak urinary level of sulphamethoxydiazine 8–2 mg. per 100 ml. occurred after 15 hours and at 48 hours the level was 4–6 mg. per 100 ml., both levels being bacteriostatic to over 80 percent, of all urinary pathogens tested. One hundred and twenty antenatal women with bacteriuria of pregnancy were treated with sulphamethoxydiazine and 93 (78 per cent.) remained clear of infection five weeks after treatment. This group was compared with a similar number of antenatal women treated with sulphadimidine, the cure rate being 91 (76 per cent.). No side or toxic effects to either the women or the infants were noted. It is suggested that sulphamethoxydiazine is effective in the treatment of urinary tract infection and because of the simple daily dosage is especially indicated when treatment is on an out‐patient basis.
