SUMMARY One hundred and fifty‐six samples of urine from 148 patients were examined using a Gelman membrane filter, and 31 of these patients were seen to have a tumour cystoscopically at the time of urine examination. In two of these cases neoplastic cells were present on the filter, but absent in the smear made from the centrifuged deposit. The significance of the “false positive” result, and its relationship to carcinoma in situ of the bladder is discussed.
