SUMMARY This paper discusses the background and effect of the use of intense cold to destroy and ablate unwanted tissue in the obstructive prostate. The equipment and methods so far adopted are explained. A review of the first 100 cases done by our Canadian group from January to August 1966 is tabulated. Our experience to date indicates that in selected cases this new modality offers a further tool in treating prostate gland disease, and thereby broadens the range of safety in surgery of the prostate.
