SUMMARY The rarity of damage to the lower urinary tract in females following introduction of a foreign body is discussed and a case of injury to the urethra and bladder following insertion of a ball–point pen is described. Attention is drawn to the motives for self–introduction of foreign bodies and the methods of treatment are discussed I am grateful to Mr J. Swinney for permission to publish details of the cases described.
