SUMMARY The urinary flow rate is a simple risk–free investigation that may yield valuable information. A single observation in an individual patient is of limited value, but serial observations may show progress of urethral obstruction or relief by surgical intervention. The maximum flow rate is of more help in urethral strictures than in prostatic obstruction.
