SUMMARY Analysis of the data on benign prostatic hyperplasia in Wales shows an excess of this condition in the Principality as a whole, an excessive differential death–rate within Wales related to the proportion of Welsh–speaking men in the population, and an excess of men with Welsh names in the geographically localised region of Swansea. Jt is concluded that there is a greater susceptibility, mediated by genetic factors, to prostatic hyperplasia among Welshmen.
