SUMMARY Three cases of anuria due to ureteric obstruction by blood clot are described. These illustrate the importance of cystoscopy and ureteric catheterisation for both diagnosis and treatment in cases of anuria. Complete anuria is nearly always of obstructive origin. When ureteric catheter irrigation fails to clear the obstruction, there is a good case for ureterostomy. In known cases of renal papillary necrosis with obstruction, lavage for seven to ten days with solutions may be required (Opit et al , 1962). We would consider trying this in any future similar cases before resorting to ureterostomy.
