SUMMARY Blood, urine and prostate cultures and estimations of intravascular hæmolysis were performed on forty‐seven patients during transurethral resection of the prostate gland. No relationship was established between the presence of a positive blood culture and intravascular hæmolysis. The source of the five observed blood‐stream infections appeared to be the urine or prostate. The occurrence and extent of hæmolysis was shown to be related to the length of operation. The importance of bacteræmia and intravascular hæmolysis is discussed in relation to renal failure and post‐operative complications.
