SUMMARY A trial of the effect of sulphamethoxazole in pyelonephritis is described. Strict criteria of success were observed, and a follow‐up conducted after cessation of treatment. Simplified methods of assessment of pyuria and bacteruria were used and proved easy and accurate. Fifty‐eight per cent, of the cases treated remained free of evidence of infection three months after treatment.
