SUMMARY1 The effects of the irritant tinct. capsici on the mucous lining of the bladder are recorded by cystometrograms and compared with controls. It is shown that while reflex micturition is precipitated prematurely, the tonus limb of the cystometrogram remains unaffected. It is argued that tonus is independent of neurogenic control and that the ability of the bladder to accommodate is a function of the physical state of its myoelastic wall. 2 The clinical implications of this physiological concept are discussed.
