SUMMARY Two separate series of cases of benign hypertrophy of the prostate treated by retropubic prostatectomy have been analysed. In the first series only 28 per cent, of cases had an uneventful convalescence. In the second series, where a closed system of drainage was used together with certain minor modifications in technique at operation, 93 per cent, of cases were uncomplicated. The average time these patients spent in the ward has fallen from twenty‐four to fifteen days.
